Our Philosophy
What are we?
We’re Grange Lane Allotments, London SE21 7LH, part of Camberwell & District Allotment Society, which is answerable to the Dulwich Estate. Our sister organisations are the Gun Site, which runs the shop (further up Grange Lane and on the left) and the allotments at Grove Lane.
Who are we?
We’re a motley crowd of well over two hundred men, women and children who share a passion for growing our very own, usually organic, produce.
Why do we do it?
Mostly on two counts, and the first is instinctual, the sheer joy of it. But as to the second count, we’re only too familiar with the arguments, to quote from the Observer Food Magazine No 46 Jan 05 "Spray with pesticides, rinse in chlorine, gas, freeze and fly: the life of a non-organic vegetable..." Is that what we really want?
And the cost?
Negligible in money terms; but boy oh boy, so very high in terms of commitment!
How to join
We are currently in the process of going through our existing waiting list and a new one will be displayed around mid-March, at which time it will be possible for you to add your details, should you be interested.
How to get started?
Digging, weeding, mulching, planting, many of us have a rough idea what we want to do. And most fellow-allotmenteers are more than happy to exchange useful tips. However, in Feb, March and April 05, the Spa Hill Organic Gardening Group run Allotment and Garden Training Days, for details, see Small Ads which you might find useful.
