Autumn/Spring
Preparation of soil - clean up allotment - make sure that all the paths around your area is cut. This is still an important time for growing for autumn and winter crops. January is good for forcing rhubarb, seakale and chicory.
What to grow
Grow what you enjoy eating and expensive in shops. Experiment with herbs and salads and the more exotic vegetables. For economy grow crops that cut-and-come-again varieties.
Hardening off
Remember that young plants such as tomatoes and chillies, which are started off inside, need to acclimatise to the outdoors.
Protecting your veg
Unfortunately all plants are susceptible to disease. Get rid on diseased plants by burning or taking them off the allotment area. Everyone has disasters with slugs and you have to experiment to find out what is best for you. Net plants from birds and cabbage whites. Remember the allotment rules specify that tall cages are not permitted.
Composting
The more you grow, the more compostable matter you amass. We do have deliveries of manure (Please do not take more than 4 wheelbarrows. Remember people do notice that the same people are always loading their wheelbarrows and consideration to other allotmentiers is a must.)
